WHY does this title seem so wordy??

  • Because I insisted on putting the word “music” first.
  • Because playing music is about thinking the way we musicians think.
  • Realize that, and you realize that the guitar is simply the tool that you have chosen with which to create your music.

MUSIC HITS US LIKE A MAGICAL FORCE

But that magic rests on some factual elements that you can learn quite logically.

Let me share with you the perspectives used in this course, they will open up for you the world of music.

You will learn using these universal skill sets we all possess

1. Logic/science-based terminology and concepts

Can you follow a recipe? Directions from your Maps app? Any process at all??
Then you can learn music:

What do we call a musical sound? A note, it has a pitch, a volume, and a duration.

What do we call a musical silence? A rest, it has a pitch (zero!), a volume (also zero!), and a duration.

See? We just start off by defining the elements of music and guitar; and we build from there.

2. Athletics/sports-based training for the physical skills of playing an instrument

Stick your Right Thumb on the top string; set the angle so that your thumb points downward; push; land on the next lower string.

Right.
But those ‘easy’ directions are like telling someone how to ride a bike, or how to use the ‘home row’ on a computer keyboard. Any physical activity needs repetition for you to master it.

I structure these tasks to be very small, so you can focus, succeed in each one, move on.

3. English language-based approach to the communicative and creative aspects of playing music

How many ‘love songs’ can you think of, right off the top of your head?
A lot, right? There are many, many ways to say the same thing. That infinite variety is why we never get tired of music. It’s all about the expression of an idea or feeling.

Art, with a capital A, is simply choosing how you wish to express a thing, right now, today. And I show you how to do that - right now, not some time in the abstract future when you are ‘good enough’.

NOW YOU ARE TOTALLY CONVINCED!

THE HOW
Innovative multi-media design leverages your device as an advanced learning tool:

  • Written text - clear definitions, explanations, paced for quick understanding
  • Demo videos - not merely the techniques, also the how, the why, and what stumbles you’re likely to encounter and how to move past them
  • Songs & exercises - quick, doable, written out so they hold still for you
  • Play-along videos - for both the songs and the exercises, so you know how it should sound and look, and have a model to base your playing on
  • “Have You Got It” an informal rubric for self assessment for each lesson

THE WHAT

  • SIX songs (Fun ones! Not telling you now, it’s a surprise!)
  • YOUR songs. You will actually learn how to make up stuff on your guitar!
  • 13 - ish foundational techniques. All the stuff about where to put your fingers.
  • A Lot - of perspective on what music is and how we think about it and manipulate it.
  • 11 - ish methods for learning and practicing music. My job is to make my self obsolete; I want you to be able to do it all on your own.
